I’m going to open up this review with “WOW”, Nightwing #8 kicks off the start of “Night of the Owls” as a prelude to the event. It’s great to see a Bat cross over finally happening in the DCU and with the first major story arc wrapped up in Nightwing #7 this issue takes it to a whole new level. This issue is surrounded with mystery, a whole lot of history and 100 per cent pure action! I haven’t met many people who haven’t been reading this series but it is on my monthly pull list and is a must for all Bat fans.
Kyle Higgins has not dropped the ball on this series nor does he look to in the future as he delivers great scene after great scene. The story flows smoothly as we open up and are taken to Gotham City in 1910, the opening dialogue hooks you in and immediately with “This is a story about love, about sacrifice, about betrayal. This is the story of how the man I will tonight is Gotham’s worst betrayer of all”. The us of repetition in this line reveals that there is a mystery to be revealed at the end of this issue. Higgins gives us insight of a young teenage boy living in the slums of Gotham trying to make some money as a street performer to help support his mother, soon the child is recruited to join a circus (yeah I am not going to go any further then that lol). Scene’s cut from a Gotham of the 1900′s to the present as we see Nightwing trying to find out how his weapon was used in a murder. However he is called by Alfred to help stop the Court of Owls from killing the elite of Gotham.
This issue has some great double page spreads as it has since issue 1 and the ending of this issue makes you want to know more immediately and to get the next issue as it comes out. Eddy Borrows being the sole penciler on this issue delivers page after page of awesomeness and his layouts are simply the best in the whole industry I feel. Borrows action scene’s with Nightwing fighting the Court is superb which details a great sword fight scene that reminds of us of an old action flick.
Simply put this series seems to get better and better for me and I can not wait to see the next issue!
Final Grade: A
